We’ve already talked about how easy it is to thrift for the oversized sweater trend. It’s so easy in fact, that you might find yourself getting carried away. We certainly have! So we have a few tips to help you stay grounded and not end up with a big woolly pile of buyer’s remorse.
The key word to remember is quality. This is true with thrifting in general, but especially important when it comes to sweaters. You should inspect items carefully for stains, pulls, pilling and holes. It’s easy to miss things even when you try them on, so look over each item carefully before bringing it to the register.
Of course if you’re totally in love with a sweater, sometimes small imperfections can be corrected. We’ve found stains that are easily removed with baking soda or a spot treatment. If you’re familiar with knitted fabrics, a small crochet hook and some patience can fix a pulled loop of yarn. Even some amount of pilling can be fixed with an old razor or battery-powered fabric shaver.
The cozy high-low hem sweater below is a size bigger than we usually wear and had some pilling under the arms. It was an easy fix with an old disposable razor. Good as new!
